App Your Game is a software platform aimed at adding quantitative and qualitative value to every African digital product through our diverse community. Through collaboration we are seeking to be the first and largest digital product community in Africa.

We decided to build in public where we share our wins and lessons by being honest and vulnerable in order to rally a community around our cause.

We have completed and released Sprint 1 of the project and we have learned a lot about our process and the market we are targeting.

Sprint 1 Deliverables

Deliverables achieved for Sprint 1

In our project planning with the development team, the first goal was to tell people who we are and what we are trying to achieve as well as allow users to get on-boarded. This mainly focused on allowing them to create a community profile and then create a business account if they had a digital product they wanted to showcase.

Although we have successfully launched Sprint 1, there were many learnings along the way.

Sprint 1 Retrospective

The first sprint was planned to be 2 weeks long, however, we did not properly consider all the public holidays in South Africa and therefore ended up taking 4 weeks to deploy the first set of features. We have learned to plan our capacity better for Sprint 2.

What worked

  • Having regular meetings to align with business, design & development.
  • Having reliable team members who communicate effectively and efficiently.
  • Having the community interact with us and give us feedback on Figma & LinkedIn.

What didn’t work

  • Setting constraints for time allocation and managing how long tasks were taking to be done.
  • By adding more elements to the sprint, we took longer to deliver and spent more time and money to deliver.
  • During our research meetings with designers and product owners, we found that our initial target audience was too wide and we needed to find a niche.

What we can do better

  • Having a better quality assurance testing process.
  • Working on managing our time and resources more effectively.
  • Spending more time on our brand and business strategy to target the right audience.

Sprint 1 Conclusion

We are seeking out new ways to make the next sprint more enjoyable and productive. We are also looking to connect more with product owners, designers and developers to hear more about their experiences, needs and frustrations so that we can work towards building a better product for the community.
